How to Sell Canva Templates on Etsy: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
Free Etsy Course, Lesson 12 of 34 · Module 3: Making Digital Products · See all lessons
To sell Canva templates on Etsy, design your template in Canva, create a Template link from Canva’s Share menu, and put that link inside a simple PDF. Then create a digital listing on Etsy and upload the PDF as the file buyers download. When someone buys, Etsy delivers the PDF, and the buyer clicks the link to get their own editable copy in Canva.
That is the whole process in one paragraph. But one step in the middle trips up more new sellers than any other, and it is not the design.
It is the link.
Canva has several ways to share a design. Only one of them, the Template link, gives buyers their own copy. Send the wrong link, and a buyer could be editing your original file. Your original. The one you spent hours on.
This lesson walks you through every step, including that one, so you get it right the first time. Every Canva and Etsy rule below comes from Canva’s Help Center and license, and Etsy’s Help Center, checked in October 2026.

What You Need Before You Start
You do not need much. That is part of why Canva templates are such a popular first digital product.
- A Canva Pro account (or another paid Canva plan). Canva’s Help Center says creating and sharing a Template link is only available on Canva Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofits plans. You can design on a free account, but you need a paid plan to create the Template link you sell.
- An Etsy shop. If you do not have one yet, follow our guide on how to start an Etsy shop.
- A product idea that buyers already search for. Step 1 covers this.
Before anything else, read the rules. Canva only allows templates “solely for use on Canva,” and some elements cannot be used in products at all. Our lesson on Canva commercial use explains exactly what you can and cannot sell.
Step 1: Pick a Template Idea Buyers Already Search For
Before you open Canva, spend fifteen minutes on Etsy.
- Type “Canva template” into Etsy’s search bar, but do not press enter.
- Look at the suggestions that drop down. Those come from real shopper searches.
- Write down five that fit your skills, like “canva wedding template” or “instagram template canva”.
- Search each one. Look for listings with recent reviews, which shows people are buying.
- Look for gaps: weak preview images, missing sizes, no bundles, or unclear instructions.
Popular Canva template types to explore:
- Social media templates (posts, stories, carousels)
- Business templates (media kits, price lists, client welcome guides)
- Planners and trackers
- Wedding and event templates (invitations, seating charts, menus, signs)
- Resume and cover letter templates
- Etsy shop branding kits (banners, logos built with fonts only, listing images)

Step 2: Design Your Template in Canva
Create a new design at the right size for your product. Then design with your buyer in mind, not just how it looks to you.
Make every part easy to edit. Text boxes, colors, and photo frames should all be simple to change. Test it as if you were a complete beginner.
Keep fonts simple. Two, maybe three fonts is plenty. Buyers who are not designers get lost in five.
Check every element’s license. Hover over an element, click the three dots, and check its source. Canva’s license says the strictest content type in a design applies to the whole design, so remove anything labelled Branded Content or Editorial Use Only.
Think about Pro elements. Canva licenses Pro content for use within a Canva Design. If your template uses Pro elements, buyers on the free plan may not be able to use them freely. Many sellers stick mostly to free elements so more buyers can edit everything.
Give real value. A set of matching pages or slides usually feels like more value than a single page.
Step 3: Clean Up the Design Before Sharing
This step is easy to skip and important to do.
Canva’s Help Center warns that when someone copies a shared design, they may be able to see hidden content: hidden pages, cropped parts of images, trimmed videos, presenter notes, and even content from earlier versions.
Before you create your Template link, Canva recommends you:
- Remove any hidden pages, notes, cropped content, or anything you do not want buyers to see.
- Make a copy of the design. Canva says the copy will not include previous revisions.
- Review the copy, then share the copy, not the original.
Step 4: Create the Template Link
Here are Canva’s official steps:
- Open the design (your cleaned-up copy).
- Select Share in the menu bar above the editor.
- Select Template link. If you do not see it, select See all first.
- Select Create template link.
- Select Copy to copy the link.
Template link vs share link: a Template link lets anyone view and use your design as a template, so each buyer starts from their own copy. A regular share link with edit access lets people change the design itself. For selling, always use the Template link.
Good to know: Canva says that if you delete a Template link, that URL stops working, and a new Template link gets a new URL. If you ever change links, update your delivery PDF too.
One more Canva note: if the person who creates the link uses a work email domain (like @company.com), Canva says recipients with that same domain need a paid plan to open it. Buyers with general email addresses like Gmail are not affected.
Step 5: Make Your Delivery PDF
Etsy delivers files, not live links, so you put the link inside a PDF. You can design the PDF in Canva too.
Keep it to one clean page:
- A small preview image of the template
- A clear heading, like “Your Canva Template”
- The clickable Template link (test that it is clickable after you export)
- Three short steps: click the link, open in Canva, start editing
- A note asking buyers not to share the link
- A short thank-you
Name the file clearly. “Wedding-Seating-Chart-Canva-Template.pdf” looks professional. “final_v3_USE_THIS.pdf” does not.
Step 6: Create Your Digital Listing on Etsy
In Shop Manager, add a new listing and choose a digital item.
Upload your PDF. Etsy’s Help Center says each digital listing can have up to 5 files, and each file can be up to 20 MB. Your delivery PDF is usually tiny, so this is not a problem.
Write a keyword-rich title. Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters, and Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words. Put the main phrase first: “Wedding Seating Chart Template, Editable Canva Template, Printable” is clearer than “Elegant Gold Dream Chart.”
Use all 13 tags. Mix broad phrases like “canva template” with specific ones like “seating chart canva.” Check your title and tags with our free Etsy title and tag checker.
Show the product clearly in photos. Show the template pages, an example of it edited, and what the buyer receives.
Follow Etsy’s new photo rules. In October 2026, Etsy announced that listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with exceptions depending on what you sell. Read how this applies to digital items in our Etsy seller updates.
Explain exactly what buyers get. In the description, say:
- It is a Canva template, delivered as a PDF with a link
- Which Canva plan buyers need, and whether it uses any Pro elements
- What is included (number of pages, sizes)
- That nothing physical will be shipped
Step 7: Price It and Publish
Price your template so it is worth your time after fees. On Etsy, a $10 digital sale costs about $1.40 in standard fees for a US seller, so you keep about $8.60. Run your own numbers in our free Etsy fee calculator.
Before you publish, do a final check:
- Click your own Template link while logged out or in another account. It should open a new copy, not your original.
- Open your PDF and confirm the link works.
- Read your title and description out loud.
Then publish.
Common Mistakes When Selling Canva Templates
Sending an edit link instead of a Template link. Buyers could change your original design. Always use the Template link.
Sharing the original design. Share a cleaned-up copy so hidden pages and old versions stay private.
Using Branded or Editorial content. One restricted element can make the whole design unsafe to sell.
Not saying which Canva plan buyers need. Confused buyers leave bad reviews.
Using Canva graphics to make logos for sale. Canva’s license does not allow its content in trademarks or logos, except fonts.
One listing and waiting. More listings give buyers more ways to find your shop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Canva Pro to sell templates on Etsy?
You can design on a free account, but Canva’s Help Center says creating and sharing a Template link is only available on Canva Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofits plans. Since the Template link is what you sell, most sellers need a paid plan.
How do I deliver a Canva template on Etsy?
Put your Canva Template link inside a PDF and upload the PDF to your Etsy digital listing. Etsy delivers the PDF automatically after purchase, and the buyer clicks the link to get their own copy in Canva.
What is the difference between a Template link and a share link?
A Template link lets anyone use your design as a template, starting from their own copy. A regular share link with edit access lets people edit the design itself. Always use the Template link for templates you sell.
Can I use Canva Pro elements in templates I sell?
Canva licenses Pro content for use within a Canva Design, and you cannot distribute Pro elements on their own. Buyers without Pro may not be able to use those elements freely, so many sellers use mostly free elements. Read our Canva commercial use guide for details.
Can buyers see hidden pages in my Canva template?
They might. Canva warns that copies of a shared design can show hidden pages, cropped content, notes, and earlier versions. Remove anything private, make a copy of the design, and share the copy.
Final Thoughts
Selling Canva templates on Etsy comes down to a few careful steps: design something buyers search for, clean it up, create a Template link, wrap it in a clear PDF, and write a listing that explains exactly what buyers get.
Get the link step right, check your licenses, and you will avoid the problems that trip up most new template sellers.
