Etsy Digital Download Files: Limits, File Types, and How Delivery Works (2026)
Free Etsy Course, Lesson 23 of 34 · Module 4: Listings and Etsy SEO · See all lessons
You finished your digital product. Now you need to get it to buyers. Etsy handles delivery for you, but only if your files follow its rules.
One wrong file type, a file that is too big, or a bad file name, and your listing will not save, or buyers will get confused.
This lesson explains everything about Etsy digital download files: the limits, supported file types, how buyers get their files, and what to do when your product is bigger than Etsy allows. Everything comes from Etsy’s Help Center, checked in October 2026.
The Quick Answer
Etsy lets you upload up to 5 files per digital listing, with a maximum of 20 MB per file. File names can be up to 70 characters using letters, numbers, periods, underscores, or hyphens. Etsy delivers instant downloads automatically after purchase, and the buyer finds them on their Downloads page.
Two Types of Etsy Digital Listings
| Type | What it is | How files are delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Instant download | A ready-made file | You upload files when you create the listing. Buyers get them right after purchase |
| Made-to-order download | A custom file made for the buyer | You upload the finished file when you complete the order |
Etsy also says digital items, like handmade items, must be made or designed by you.
Etsy Digital File Limits
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Files per listing | Up to 5 |
| Size per file | Up to 20 MB |
| File name length | Up to 70 characters |
| Allowed name characters | Letters, numbers, periods, underscores, hyphens |
| Variations | Not available for digital items |
File names cannot be changed after upload. Etsy says the file names you see are the ones buyers see, so name files clearly before uploading.

Supported File Types
Etsy’s Help Center lists these supported file types for digital listings:
.bmp, .doc, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .mobi, .mov, .mp3, .mpeg, .pdf, .png, .psp, .rtf, .stl, .txt, .zip, .ePUB, and .iBook
Selling SVG files or fonts? .svg is not on Etsy’s list. Many sellers put files like these into a .zip file, which Etsy does support.
How to Upload Digital Files Step by Step
- Start a new listing and choose Digital files when Etsy asks what type of item it is.
- For an instant download, use Add files to upload up to 5 files.
- Check each file name before uploading, since you cannot rename it later.
- Finish your listing and publish.
For made-to-order digital items: in the listing, set When did you make it? to Made To Order. When the file is ready, go to Shop Manager, then Orders, check the order, select Complete order, upload up to 5 files of up to 20 MB each, and select Complete order again. Etsy emails the buyer that the files are ready.
What If Your Product Is Bigger Than 20 MB?
Big bundles, video courses, and high-resolution art packs can go over Etsy’s limit. Common solutions:
- Compress images before adding them, without dropping below the quality buyers need.
- Split the product across up to 5 files.
- Zip related files together to stay organized.
- Deliver a PDF with a download link. Upload a small PDF that links to your files hosted elsewhere. This is also how Canva templates are delivered. See how to sell Canva templates on Etsy.
Helpful Extras for Buyers
Add a note for buyers. Etsy lets you add one note that applies to all your digital listings. Buyers see it on their Downloads page, which is a great place for simple instructions like “Unzip the file before opening.”
Include a quick-start file. A one-page PDF that explains what is included, how to open the files, and how to print them reduces confused messages.
Changing Files After a Sale
You can remove and add files when you edit a listing. Etsy says an instant digital listing cannot be saved without at least one file attached. Etsy also says canceling an order is the only way to revoke a buyer’s access to a file after purchase.
Can Digital-Only Sellers Earn Star Seller?
Yes. Etsy says sellers who only sell digital items are still eligible for Star Seller. You will not see an on-time shipping score, but Etsy still considers your other metrics.
Common Mistakes With Etsy Digital Files
Uploading .svg files directly. Put them in a .zip.
Messy file names. “Planner-Weekly-A4.pdf” is clearer than “final_v3 copy (2).pdf”, and you cannot rename after upload.
Files over 20 MB. Compress, split, or use a PDF with a link.
No instructions. Use the buyer note and a quick-start PDF.
Expecting variations. Etsy does not allow variations for digital items, so create separate listings for different versions.
