Life happens. You travel, get sick, or simply need a week to catch up on orders. You do not want to close your Etsy shop, but you cannot take new orders right now either.

That is what Etsy’s Vacation Mode is for. Some sellers call it “holiday mode.”

This lesson explains what Vacation Mode does, what still keeps running (including some fees), and how to use it without hurting your shop. Everything comes from Etsy’s Help Center, checked in October 2026.

Etsy vacation mode: how and when to use it, and what fees keep running

What Is Etsy Vacation Mode?

Vacation Mode is an Etsy setting that temporarily pauses new orders. While it is on, buyers can still visit your shop and message you, but your listings are hidden from search and cannot be bought. It stays on until you turn it off, and you still handle existing orders, messages, and recurring fees.

When Should You Use Vacation Mode?

Etsy says sellers typically use it when they:

  • Are traveling or unavailable for a long time
  • Are sick or dealing with an emergency
  • Need time to catch up on orders

It is a better choice than closing your shop if you plan to come back.

How to Turn Vacation Mode On or Off

You can turn Vacation Mode on or off in Shop Manager on Etsy.com or in the Etsy Seller app, as long as it is optional for your shop.

Important: if Etsy put your shop in Vacation Mode (for example, to resolve an account issue), you cannot turn it off yourself. Check your Shop Manager for action items. Our guide to an Etsy account suspended explains common causes.

Fees That Keep Running

Vacation Mode does not stop monthly billing. Etsy lists:

  • Auto-renew fees: listings set to auto-renew that expire during Vacation Mode are renewed and charged. You can turn off auto-renew.
  • Listing expiration: listings not set to auto-renew still expire after 4 months, and the countdown does not pause.
  • Etsy Plus: the monthly fee continues, and unused credits still expire.
  • Pattern: billing continues while your Pattern site is paused.
  • New draft listings: no listing fee until you publish them after you return.

If your account becomes overdue during Vacation Mode, Etsy says you must pay the balance before you can reopen.

Step by Step: Set Up Vacation Mode the Smart Way

  1. Finish or plan open orders. Vacation Mode does not cancel your responsibilities.
  2. Write a Vacation Announcement. It appears at the top of your shop homepage. Say when you will be back.
  3. Set an auto-reply. Etsy says unanswered messages count against your Star Seller response rate, but auto-replies count as responses.
  4. Check auto-renew settings so you are not charged for renewals you do not want.
  5. Turn on Vacation Mode in Shop Manager or the Etsy Seller app.
  6. Set a reminder to turn it off. Vacation Mode stays on indefinitely until you switch it off.

Do not send buyers elsewhere. Etsy says your announcement and auto-reply should not direct buyers to buy from your personal website, under its Off-Platform Transactions policy.

Buyers Can Get Notified When You Return

Etsy says buyers will see an option to get an email when your shop reopens, and you cannot hide this option. That can bring shoppers back the day you return.

Alternatives to Full Vacation Mode

If you only need a little extra time, you might not need Vacation Mode at all. Extending your processing times for a while can let you keep selling while giving buyers honest delivery estimates.
